A lithograph is printed from a polished stone block, onto which the artist draws with a waxy crayon before ink is rolled across the surface. The ink adheres only to the wax, and the stone is pressed onto paper to transfer the image. Colour is built up using multiple stones, and printing runs are kept low to preserve value.
Both are "intaglio" methods printed from an incised metal plate. Engraving cuts lines directly into the plate with fine tools, producing a rich line quality. Etching uses an acid bath to recess the design, allowing dramatic contrasts between delicate and heavy lines with the spontaneity of sketching.
French for "stencil," pochoir produces crisp lines and brilliant, freshly printed colour. The artist hand-cuts a series of stencils and applies pigment — traditionally gouache — through each in turn. It is a slow, labour-intensive process, making finished works especially prized.
